Basketry

We make a variety of black ash splint baskets. pack baskets, corn washers, picking baskets, laundry baskets, trays, sifters etc. We like to make the more functional early style baskets rather than the fancy ornamentals.

We harvest one log a year and pound along its length until the annual rings separate. Then the long splints are removed, cleaned, sized, and then sometimes split further into thinner gauges. We then soak the splints and weave the basket. Rims and handles are split out of white ash or hickory logs and hand carved on a drawknife horse. We steam bend them and custom fit each rim to its basket. Each basket is unique and can take up to a week to finish. We try and make baskets all year long so we have some available but not every size or style is in the workshop so please contact us.
