Elm Bark Containers
We harvest one elm tree a year for making
containers. Michael will hunt for the proper tree in the winter and remember
where it is for spring harvest. Elm is very rare so we select only trees that
already have Dutch Elm’s disease yet are still alive for cutting. The best time
to remove elm bark is when the leaves are as big as a squirrel’s ear. Elm can be
made into buckets, baskets, barrels, canoes, ladles, bowls, and even into
knives. Because of the scarcity of elm there are very few Native people working
with it. We use the inner bark as the lacing and ash or hickory for the rims.
