Wa-nu-ken Programs

We offer a variety of programs that we can bring to your site, school or organization. Below is a list of programs and pricing.
STORYTELLER
Tonia has performed her unique style of storytelling for audiences across the country. She can do a program for any age level or learning level. Her blend of Haudenosaunee and Great Basin stories is a wonderful and personal look at life in Native America. Tonia can tailor her stories to focus on any aspect of Native culture. For example, she can tell plant stories to a botanical club or child raising stories for a PTA.

FIREMAKER
The firemaking demonstration is suitable for any age. It starts with the Paiute creation of fire story all the while preparing the materials for a hand drill fire. Some audience participation is required but not necessary, culminating with the miracle of fire. Then a demonstration of other ways to build fire with a talk about the importance and Native philosophy of fire ends the program.
The firemaking workshop includes the entire program above but takes the event one step further. The participants then gather (if possible) the materials needed for fire making and with personal instruction learn how to build a friction fire. The response to this program has been extremely positive.

NATIVE HOMEMAKER
This program depends greatly on the season and availability of materials. Cordage demonstrations and workshops take the participant back to a time where even the string has to be hand made. The demonstration includes a historical look at Native fiber work including bags, ropes, cordage, tumplines, belts, slings, and nets. An informal discussion of techniques and materials and a demonstration of thigh rolling and reverse wrapping natural fibers end the program.
The workshops include all of the demonstration and then a one-on-one instruction on how to make one of the following: Fiber Bag, Prisoner Tie, Tumpline, Cornhusk Bottle, or Cornhusk Mat.
